Good handwashing with soap can prevent nearly half of all cases of childhood diarrhoea. It is also estimated that drinking clean water and handwashing with soap can reduce the loss of nutrients through diarrhoea, and reduce stunting in children under the age of five by up to 15 percent. USAID’s INCA is encouraging families to wash their hands with soap at the critical times like after defecation, before handling food, before eating, and before feeding a child. It has been well established that to achieve behavior of hand washing, soap must be present at the handwashing site. To facilitate these actions, the project is recommending the families to install tippy tap near the latrine and kitchen. “Tippy tap” is a simple device that serves as a convenient access point for water and a visual reminder to wash one’s hands at crucial times. USAID’s INCA also promoting hand washing with soap at health facility level and school. Apart from these USAID’s INCA celebrates Global Handwashing Day jointly with GoB at community, facility level and schools to create mass awareness on appropriate handwashing practices.
